Welcome to our new Musical Director
David Henley BA(Hons), CertMusEd
David Henley is a distinguished conductor, educator, and cornetist with a 20-year legacy of musical leadership across Cumbria. Combining high-level academic training with elite-level performance experience, he holds a BA (Hons) in Music Education and a Certificate in Musical Education for Peripatetic Teaching.
A musician of high technical standing, David has spent much of his career performing at the higher levels of the brass band movement. He has held the position of Principal Cornet for a number of Top Section Cumbrian bands, with the distinction of leading these ensembles at major contests and high-profile concert venues. As a soloist he gained numerous victories in slow melody contests, a testament to the lyrical phrasing and technical precision developed under the tutelage of several former Black Dyke Band principals, including Ian Porthouse and Roger Webster.
This depth of experience has provided David with a particular specialism in the fundamental mechanics of brass playing, specifically embouchure correction and advanced diaphragm control. His ability to diagnose and resolve technical challenges has helped musicians of all levels develop a more resonant and effortless sound.
On the podium, David has spent over two decades conducting various ensembles throughout Cumbria, becoming a respected figure known for blending rigorous musical standards with pedagogical insight. Currently serving as the Musical Director for Kirkby Lonsdale Brass Band, David continues to be a driving force in the region’s musical community, using his vast experience as a principal player and educator to inspire the next generation of brass musicians.
